Doing it In the Dark

6 Comments on Doing it In the Dark

I have a fairly intense job.

It’s one of those entirely over-the-top 7 days per week kinda gigs.

But I also have this teensy tiny, itty bitty…… little horse addiction.

Well…..that’s not exactly what I meant, but I do have little horses too!

The job is a definite requirement, but riding the ponies is…………..

well…. it’s why I have the job……so riding is………just……. not…… optional.

This means that I ride EARLY in the morning…..often in the dark.

Riding in the dark comes with its own adventures.
Here is a link to a particularly memorable Bad Eventer “Doing it in the Dark” story.

Yesterday I was walking along the trot path in the small hours of the morning….. just as things are starting to reveal themselves. It was that time pre-dawn where you can’t quite see clearly but it’s just light enough that everything is outlined and ghostly.

I could make out the path and the trees…….  just barely.

My fabulous dog who always clears the way was walking next to us…..

He helps raise all the babies.

….when I spotted something just ahead that seemed to be waving in the breeze. It was shrub size…….. but I was pretty sure there wasn’t a shrub in that particular spot.

It looked a bit like a fan……

or a palm frond……

or maybe a turkey tail………..

Turkey season is over….. and as I was wondering exactly where the turkeys hang out the rest of the year I got a little closer to what I had thought might be a turkey.

And in the moment that I realized what it really was…. my trusty pup ran right up to it………..

that is when I realized that all 3 of us (Puppy, Pony & Bad Eventer)………..

were in the KILL ZONE.

Just in case you need it, bleach is an instant cure for skunk oil. Works best if you do not try to bathe first, just use diluted bleach soln. and sponge it on. It kills skunk oder on contact.

LOL, oh if only I'd known what to do BEFORE our dog got skunked. This is sage advice. DO NOT BATHE FIRST! Also I heard a paste of baking soda and hydrogren peroxide works well if you don't want to bleach your animals. I really hope none of you got sprayed!

Not ever having what I needed when I needed it, I have doused my dogs in Fabreeze. I carefully follow the directions on the label by not spraying it into their eyes and I don't put them next to heat or flames. Fabreeze works like a charm on skunk stink and dead things, and doesn't hurt the dogs–who promptly seek out more dead things to correct my insult.
