A Little Luck

One thing I learned this summer.

There was plenty of bad riding long before Bad Eventer came along……

Most of these statues are hundreds and some 1000+ years old. Not only is bad horsemanship nothing new, it was so common place…………….. artist after artist immortalized it………………

I call this my collection of “Bad Horsemanship Art from Around the World”

OK, this one isn’t a horse………that’s a famous poet……………

There’s one statue in Budapest that is particularly special.

And no it’s not the fact that it’s the only statue with a horse that looks reasonably happy………of course this horse may have more reason to be happy than most.

If you take a closer look at this statue, you’ll notice one particular part…… that isn’t green.

It’s rather gold and um….. “polished” looking.

That’s because Hungarians believe if you touch this particular horse’s “jewels” you will pass your exams, and in general have good luck.

I always wonder exactly where these kind of traditions come from, but there was quite a line of people waiting for…………….

the honor.

At first I declined……………..and as we walked away I started thinking ……

You know…….

I am BAD EVENTER……..I’m about to head off to be a working student…………….

I could probably use all the luck I can manage.

The farther we walked the more I thought I could use the luck, and I may never be in Budapest again………….and I was missing my “opportunity”……………..

A few blocks away, I told my gracious hosts that we had better go back………..

It’s a little treacherous to climb up on this statue, and I was wondering if I fell and broke my ankle what that would mean for my promised “luck”…………

My cousin managed to climb up there in a skirt!

Fortunately, there were no statue climbing mishaps, and here’s the evidence!

Bad Eventer goes to Budapest…………
and hopefully comes back with a little luck!
