What kind of horses do you have?

Comments Off on What kind of horses do you have?

This is the most common question I get when a new aquaintance finds out I have horses.

I have a challenging time answering this seemingly simple question……………..

I typically say,

“One of Each!!!”

I have at least twenty ten breeds represented on my property.

American Thoroughbreds
Hanovarians
Foundation Quarter Horses
Irish Thoroughbreds & Miniature Horses
Zebra Hybrids
(OK, I don’t have him anymore, but he looks cool so I still claim him.)
Oh there’s more……………………But back to the question.
“What kind of horses do you have?” I say, “One of each……………..”

To which I usually get a strange look.

Then I say something cute like, if you name it, I’ve probably got one.

Then they reply, “Oh do you have ROPING HORSES?”

Um………No.
“Oh do you have BARREL HORSES?”

Um……………… No.

“Oh do you have TEAM PENNING HORSES?”

Um…………………………….No.

About then is when I remember where I live, and that those are the ONLY “KIND” of horses around here. People don’t seem to understand that horses can be different breeds.

Then I have to explain different Dog breeds……………………

Makes me laugh every time!

…………..and that horses can also come in different breeds.

Yes, these two are mine.

Then I get the question, “Oh………….so what breeds do you have?”

Me bracing myself, “I have mostly Thoroughbreds.”

The blank stare…………and then…….”Well, yeah, but Thoroughbred WHAT? Thoroughbred Quarter Horses???”

That’s when I change the subject……………………

Now!

Just so we are clear on this topic. FRIENDS do NOT make FRIENDS count their horses.

Just sayin’!!

I see nothing wrong with the answer to how many I have as, “I don’t know……..

I can’t count them, they keep MOVING around!”

 Or, “How many??………More than one.”

But invariably they all want to know just HOW MANY I have.

And for the record…………

I have NO IDEA.
